Clearview AI’s Facial Tech Found to Violate Australians’ Privacy

Clearview AI Inc. must delete information on Australians after the nation’s privacy regulator found that the facial recognition company illegally gathered data on peoples’ faces without their permission.

The finding came from a joint investigation by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Information Commissioner’s Office in the U.K.

Clearview has stirred controversy for scraping more than 3 billion images from social media and other online sources to build a searchable database for facial recognition. Privacy regulators in Canada and Europe also have scrutinized the company’s data practices as law enforcement and government agencies use its technology.
